How to Play Percussive, Muted Strumming
A percussive chord-strum 'chuck' is not the same as palm muting. Palm muting near the bridge shortens a pitched note; a dead strum turns the strings into a noise-like percussion hit. For a dead strum, the fretting hand usually releases pressure while keeping contact with the strings, and the picking hand continues the normal strumming motion.
Where the dead sound comes from
Fret a chord, then release the fretting-hand pressure while keeping the fingers in contact with the strings. Strum across several deadened strings to produce a short noise accent with no clear pitch. Open strings may also need help from the picking-hand palm or fingers, but this is different from continuous palm muting at the bridge.
Finding the right amount of pressure
Too much palm pressure kills the sound entirely - just silence, no rhythmic 'chuck' at all. Too little and the strings ring almost open, with no audible mute. The right amount sits in between: the strings are deadened, but the hit still reads as a clear rhythmic accent.
Dead strums versus palm muting
A dead strum is usually placed on selected beats as a percussion accent. Palm muting can instead remain in contact through a series of notes or chords: the palm touches near the bridge while each pitch remains identifiable. Both can appear in one pattern, but they produce different sounds and should be practiced separately.
Where to place muted hits in a pattern
The most common move is to mute the hit right before a strong beat (usually before beat one) - it creates a sense of build-up before the accent, familiar from funk and reggae. Another option is muting every upstroke while leaving downstrokes open, which gives a more pronounced, 'chopped' rhythmic feel.
How to train it
Start slowly on a single open chord: alternate one open hit and one muted hit, listening to the difference between them on its own, before moving to a real strumming pattern that mixes the two. A metronome matters here just as much as in regular strumming - a muted hit is easy to accidentally shorten or drop in duration if you're not tracking the tempo.
