How to Create Tension and Release in a Guitar Solo

Tension and release isn't one specific technique - it's a general principle: first create a sense of incompleteness for the listener (tension), then clearly remove it (release). Several devices already covered individually - outside playing, passing notes, bends - create exactly that feeling when applied deliberately.

Sources of tension you already know how to play

An outside note played and held slightly longer than expected (see the article on playing outside), a bend pulled just past the target and held before landing exactly on pitch (see the article on bending), or a chromatic passing note where the phrase briefly 'hangs' instead of moving straight on (see the article on passing notes) - these are already familiar devices that start to sound like tension precisely when their timing is stretched slightly.

The release needs to be audible, not just the next note

Tension only reads as a device if the release stands out against it: a chord tone on a strong beat, played slightly louder or held longer than the surrounding notes (see the article on targeting chord tones). If the resolving note doesn't differ in duration or dynamics from the previous one, the ear doesn't register it as the point where the tension let go - the phrase just keeps going.

How long the tension lasts is also part of the device

Longer tension before the release feels stronger, but only up to a point - hold a bend or an outside note too long with no forward motion, and the listener stops hearing direction in it and starts hearing a stalled phrase instead of a building one. Starting out, hold the tension only briefly - one note or half a beat - and stretch it only once the difference between 'a little' and 'too long' becomes clearly audible.

Drill: the same bend, three different hold lengths

Play the same half-step bend into the same target note three times in a row: with no hold at the top, with a short hold, and with a noticeably longer one. Listen for which version makes the difference between tension and release clearest - that is your starting point for your own sense of timing.
